Editorial view
Opera GX is Opera wearing a gaming skin, and the skin is most of the point. RAM, CPU, and network limiters let you cap what the browser consumes while a game runs, GX Corner surfaces game releases and deals, and the whole interface leans into the aesthetic with sounds and themes. Since March 2026 it ships on Linux too, alongside macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS.
Under the skin
Opera's Chromium base with V8, which means:
- Chrome Web Store extensions and Manifest V3
- The optional built-in ad blocker, and the browser VPN with the same scope limits as mainline Opera
- Workspaces, native Split Screen, and AI tab commands
- A sidebar with messengers, sync, and web-app installs
Reader mode needs an extension here. Google is the default search engine, telemetry is built in with policy controls, and no fingerprinting posture is claimed. Private windows clear local traces and nothing else.
About those limiters
They are controls, not benchmarks. Capping the browser's RAM genuinely stops a tab pile from eating a gaming session, but nothing about GX makes pages faster than Chrome or Opera proper, and this profile makes no speed claim for it. Treat the limiter as a discipline tool for people who keep forty tabs open behind a full-screen game.
The same ownership note as mainline Opera applies, since it is the same company, and so does the same VPN caveat: browser-traffic proxy, not device VPN, not anonymity.
The verdict
Choose GX if the gaming integrations and resource caps solve a problem you actually have, or honestly, if you just like how it looks, which is a legitimate reason to pick software you stare at all day. Avoid it if you want a quiet interface or a stronger privacy default than Opera's, because the skin changes none of that. If what drew you in is the workspaces and split screen rather than GX Corner, mainline Opera ships those with less noise, while Vivaldi out-organises both. One practical note for switchers: GX and Opera share an account and sync, so moving between the two costs almost nothing, and trying GX for a season does not lock you into the aesthetic.
