Editorial view

Vivaldi is for people who treat the browser as a workspace and want the controls built in rather than bolted on. No extension stack in this directory replaces its feature set, and no other browser ships all of it at once.

Everything, natively

Every organisational feature in this directory's workflow table is native here:

  • A tab bar that docks to any edge, with two-level tab stacks
  • Workspaces, and tab tiling for split view
  • Web Panels in the sidebar, plus Reader View
  • Quick Commands as a command palette
  • Sync, translation, and web-app installs

What it is built on

Chromium and V8, so site compatibility and Chrome Web Store extensions carry over. The interface layer above it is Vivaldi's own proprietary code, source-published as drops at vivaldi.com/source but not an open project you build the product from. Vivaldi Technologies is Norwegian, funded by search and partner deals rather than ads it serves you, and the default search engine reflects that: it varies by region among privacy-leaning partners such as Startpage, Ecosia, DuckDuckGo, and Qwant.

Privacy, the sensible middle

A native ad and tracker blocker with selectable lists is built in but must be judged like any list-based blocker, imperfect and configurable. Telemetry is limited to things like an install-ID ping and is documented. Proton VPN is integrated on desktop. No hardened fingerprinting posture is claimed, and private windows are ordinary local-privacy windows. Vivaldi has also stated plainly that it will not ship LLM chat or summarisation features, which in 2026 is itself a differentiator, in whichever direction you count it.

The cost

Density. Vivaldi's settings run pages deep, the interface rewards people who tune it and mildly punishes people who will not, and its custom UI means some extensions present oddly compared with Chrome. It is heavier to learn than anything else here except maybe SigmaOS.

The verdict

Choose Vivaldi if tab stacks, tiling, and workspaces describe how you already think, and you would rather configure one browser than maintain six extensions. Skip it if you want minimal chrome around your web pages, or if strict engine independence matters, because under all the controls this is still Chromium.

Where these facts come from

Every capability above is read from a primary source and dated. 1 of 30 fields stay recorded as unknown rather than assumed.
